The purpose of the role is to support our community especially new Asian immigrants who want to improve their health and wellbeing. Walk with Us is a non-profit community programme led by volunteer walk leaders. Walks range from 1.5 h to 2 h long and most of the routes are based in parks in Central Auckland. The main thing we need from our volunteer walk leaders is enthusiasm for walking and leading community walking. In addition we need our volunteers to be: • Have a reliable vehicle and valid driver license or access to public transport • Friendly, welcoming and empowering with good communication skills • Observant and sensitive to the needs of others • Reliable, punctual, honest and well-organised • Able to work independently but with guidance and support • Confident at speaking in front of the community • Able to take control and be assertive when needed • Ideally fluent in Mandarin Chinese and English • Computer literate • Physically fit and healthy

Working location

Location varies each week in parks and reserves in Central Auckland. Approximately 2 hours outdoor, and half an hour admin work including data recording, photo taking, communication, and 1 - 1.5 hours route testing

Proposed project steps with time estimates

Prior to the walk (1 hour - 1.5 hours)
• Please confirm who will lead that Sunday’s walk by Tuesday. The leader of the week contacts Sherry (Sport Auckland Coordinator) to confirm the assembly point. Sherry will send out arrangements on Wednesday;
• The leader of the week check map and get familiar with the route;
• The leader read RAMS forms closely which is signed by the manager and Sherry every Wednesday or Thursday

On the walk day (2 hours)
• The leader must check weather forecast and contact Sherry at 7 am if there is medium or heavy rain. Cancel the walk and inform the group if the weather is not suitable for walk. Sherry will cancel the walk on Facebook and WeChat;
• The leader must arrive at the assembly point no later than 9:50 am and assist the new comers to register and the existing members to sign up;
• The leader must gather everyone, introduce him or herself, announce important notice (such as key information in RAMS form and WeChat notice that is related to the session. For example, in Western Spring Lake or along the coast line, the leader must remind the group to keep away from water and be careful not to step into the water), count number of participants, and arrange volunteers to assist (for every 8 to 9 participants, there should be 1 volunteer) to remind participants of potential hazards and keep everyone in track and no one get lost;
• Arrange to take a group photo once or twice during the walk if time permits;
• Hand out walk survey 3 or 4 times a year and gather the group’s feedback

Post-walk (0.5 hour)
• Take a photo of the registration and signup forms and share with Sherry via email or WeChat;
• Share the names of the volunteers with Sherry;
• Keep Sherry informed if there is anything worth noticing such as areas to be improved, things we are proud of, etc
