Leadership coaching
This information will help you compile a project for a volunteer to provide leadership coaching to enable you or another member of your organisation to become a stronger leader.
Skills required
You’re likely to require the volunteer to have:
- Experience in leadership development or coaching
- Experience in a key leadership role - as an executive, advisor or board member (optional but beneficial)
Likely project deliverables
The pro bono professional will deliver the following:
- A set number of one hour coaching sessions at a specified frequency
- Help with goal-setting and shaping a pathway for development
- Help with identifying actionable steps to ensure accountability to the plan

Hours for a project like this will vary depending on the number of sessions, and timeframe agreed.
Example of project steps with time estimates
Step one: Assessment and coaching plan
The volunteer meets with the person from the not for profit discuss goals for the coaching sessions. The staff member will take notes to form their own coaching plan.
Likely time commitment for volunteer: one to two hours for preparation and initial meeting
Step two: Coaching sessions
Four one-hour coaching sessions are held fortnightly or monthly. In each session goals are reviewed, actionable steps are created and assessed and captured by the staff member.
Likely time commitment for volunteer: four hours for coaching and two for preparation and reflection
Step three: Wrap up
A final session to capture the learnings, successes and progress made. The volunteer and person being coached may put in place a plan.
