Holy Family School
Estimated Time: 8 - 16 Hours Over 1 - 3 Months
We do not have any road side frontage. Our driveway is our main access point for our students and is currently quite an unsafe place for children and parents. We close the gates for half an hour in the morning and afternoon to minimize the risk to students, however this doesn’t remove the risk completely. We have had two documented ‘Near Miss’ incidents with cars and young children. Our aim is to create a better road side frontage, with new gate and fence. This will include a pedestrian access down one side of our driveway that will have a barrier to separate pedestrians from vehicles. This pedestrian access will run right to our front door and include a safe passage across the driveway to our school hall. This pedestrian access will remove some current car parks, so a new car park area will need to be installed in place of a current grassed area.
Benefit statement
We are prioritising students safety by reassessing our car park, as car parks are always dangerous especially for a school, but when the car park is a main entrance and egress point this heightens the risk and we want all of our children to be 100% safe at school.
What we need
At first we need an architect or draughtsman to draw up plans for the driveway upgrade. From there we are confident that we will have community support to carry out the labour side of the task. We will then source materials. We are located at 169 Mungavin Ave. Holy Family School.
What would be nice to have
It would be nice to have some contacts that could spare some heavy machinery to assist with the completion of the task once plans etc have come to fruition. I am unsure of the time it would take for an architect to put together a plan for this project, but it shouldn't be too long as it doesn't involve anything structural. It would involve a visit to the site to get measurements and have a talk about our vision therefore the estimated time is at the discretion of the professional kindly offering their services to us.
What we have in place
We have already talked to the Parish who share the driveway with us and they have given consent to proceed. I have contacted the Archdiocese of Wellington who handle our property matters and while they see this as important it isn't yet on our 10 Year Property plan document which means it isn't close to getting done.
Here is a video showcasing our school - the boy at the start walks down a drive way; this is the area that needs an upgrade.
