Estimated Time: 12 - 18 Hours Over 0 - 1 Months

The Gender Equal New Zealand movement, run by the National Council of Women, is looking for a volunteer to research the media to identify key industry stakeholders that can influence gender equality in news reporting. This work is a building block towards a programme to reduce sexism in the news media, through working constructively with media champions to identify and highlight bias, often unconscious, towards women. The volunteer needs to know how the media works, have good analytical skills and an interest in gender issues. We’d expect this work to take about 18 hours over a period of one month

Working location

There’d be about four hours of meetings during this project. We’d like to do these during working hours. If you’re Welllington-based, we could come to you in the CBD, or you could visit our CBD office. Otherwise we could skype or phone if you’re located elsewhere.

Proposed project steps with time estimates

We’d expect that the volunteer would:
Read briefing material (one hour)
Attend a meeting with us to discuss the project (up to two hours)
Undertake the research (up to ten hours)
Meet with us to give an update during the research phase (up to one hour)
Write up/present the information (up to three hours)
Meet with us to handover the information and for us to say thank you! (one hour)

What We Have In Place

We’ve done the preparation work so we’re ready to go on this project. We have a strategic plan, and a white paper on enabling women’s potential which outlines the need to use levers like the news media to achieve gender equality.
