Community Driver Mentor Programme Driving a car can open up so many opportunities – from getting a job to looking after whanau or taking your tamariki to school on a cold, wet day. However, for many people moving through the licensing system can be a challenge. This is where we hope you’ll come in! We have established a Community Mentor Driving programme to help people move from their learner licence to their restricted. We’re looking for some superstar-driving mentors to support these learners. Sound like you? We provide full training and support, as well as a car with dual controls. Proposed project steps with time estimates
The structure of the Driver Mentoring Programme is based on the NZTA Community Driver Mentor Programme. This programme matches trained and police-checked mentors with learner drivers.
Each learner driver is allocated a volunteer mentor. The mentor supervises the learner driver while they practise in a dual-control car provided by Te Ora Hou.
Each learner driver has three driving lessons with a qualified Driving Instructor and their mentor.
Requirements of a Mentor
• Full NZ driver's licence for a minimum of 2 years
• Be over 25
• Be able to pass police vetting
• Be a confident and capable driver
• Have a good understanding of the NZ Road Code
• Commit to 2 hours of training
o Advanced driving skills assessment - to determine your suitability for the role and ensure you have a strong understanding and working knowledge of the NZ Road Code and are a confident and capable driver. This will be facilitated by a qualified driving instructor.
o Safety Intervention training – to help you understand your role as a mentor and the use of the dual controls. This is facilitated by a qualified driving instructor
• Commit to attending the driving lesson with the learner driver
• Commit to at least x 1-hour lessons per week for at least 3 months.
• Work unsupervised
• Be physically and mentally able to mentor
• Communicate with the Driver Mentor Programme Coordinator regarding the availability
• Abide by the Te Ora Hou policies and procedures
• Notify the Driver Mentor Programme Coordinator of any vehicle issues
Attributes of mentor
• Feel comfortable working alongside people from a variety of backgrounds and ages
• Patient and calm, some driving students struggle with confidence, learning issues or have English as a second language, so being a supportive and encouraging coach is paramount
• Communicate effectively
